Merle E. Stewart, a beloved member of his family and community, passed away on December 31, 2024, at the Hospice of Southern Kentucky. He was born on March 28, 1931, and lived a life marked by dedication to both his profession and those he cherished.
Merle dedicated 25 years of his professional life as a draftsman at Detrex, where his meticulous work and commitment to excellence were revered by his colleagues. In addition to his distinguished career, Merle served his country as a Korean War Veteran in the Army, demonstrating courage and sacrifice that exemplified his character.
In his personal life, Merle was a man of varied interests and hobbies. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, finding freedom and joy on the open road. He was an avid supporter of UK basketball, often eagerly anticipating game days. Another of his passions was working on antique clocks, where his precision and patience shone through, allowing him to preserve pieces of history for future generations.
Merle is survived by his loving daughters Sondra (Johnny) Brasel, and Linda G. Payne; his sons, James (Sue) Stewart and Richard W. Stewart. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and delighted in his status as a great-grandfather to eighteen great-grandchildren.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, especially in the absence of his beautiful wife of 61 years, Sharon Runner Stewart, who died before him. Merle also mourned the loss of his son, Fred E. Stewart, as well as his father, Edgar Walker Stewart, and mother, Rheda Willis Stewart. He was preceded in death by his brothers, David A. Stewart and James Raymond Stewart.
Merle's legacy of love, dedication, and passion for life will forever be remembered in the hearts of his family and friends.
